From the evening of 27th June, for a limited time only, individuals visiting The Royal Mint Experience will have the opportunity to strike their very own 2019 dated 50p Sherlock Holmes Brilliant Uncirculated coin.

Those attending the talk by Stephen Raw, designer of the Sherlock Holmes 50p coin will be the first to strike their very own Sherlock Holmes Brilliant Uncirculated coin.

2019 marks the 160th anniversary of the birth of the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, so this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate Conan Doyle’s most famous work – Sherlock Holmes.

The character Sherlock Holmes has inspired countless films, video games, radio plays and TV series. In addition to creating one of the world’s most famous fictional characters, Conan Doyle also highlighted how important fingerprints could be as a type of evidence – with a fingerprint being mentioned in the 1890 story, The Sign of the Four. Scotland Yard did not use the now iconic technique until 1901.

Nicola Howell, Director of the Consumer Business at The Royal Mint said, “The opportunity to strike your own coin at The Royal Mint Experience has always been very popular with collectors and with Sherlock Holmes being one of the world’s most famous fictional characters we know that the opportunity to strike your own Sherlock Holmes 50p coin will be equally as appealing.”

Members of the public will be able to strike their 2019 dated Sherlock Holmes Brilliant Uncirculated 50p coin for an additional charge of £6.90 after booking a Royal Mint Experience tour. Customers are limited to one tour a day and are only allowed to strike one coin during their visit.

The Royal Mint Experience provides a great opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover stories from The Royal Mint’s 1,100 year history. Visitors can see for themselves how coins are made, then tour through a series of walk-through interactive exhibition zones that bring the organisation’s rich heritage to life. The Royal Mint Experience is also currently exhibiting an incredibly rare 1819 George III Sovereign, which will be for sale in a one-off ballot auction for £100,000 this July.
